Why Visit Kenya?

American travelers come to Kenya for the Maasai Mara migration, Amboseli's elephants beneath Kilimanjaro, Diani's coastline, and Nairobi's fast-growing business scene. Direct and one-stop routings run from several US hubs via Europe, the Gulf, and Addis Ababa.

US passport holders are the only nationality offered a five-year multiple-entry eTA, which changes the calculation for anyone with recurring business in East Africa or a habit of returning. Frequent travelers should weigh it against buying a single-entry eTA every trip.

Check Requirements

Documents Required

Prepare clear digital files before you apply. The most common delays come from unreadable scans, cropped photos, incomplete accommodation details, or travel dates that do not match the supporting documents.

US Passport

Your passport should usually be valid for at least six months from your planned date of entry and should match the name entered in the ETA form.

Digital photo

Use a recent color photo with a plain background. Avoid glare, filters, heavy shadows, hats, or glasses that hide the face.

Accommodation or host details

Provide hotel booking details, lodge confirmation, host address, or business contact information in Kenya where applicable.

Travel itinerary

Keep your arrival date, departure date, airline booking, and local travel plan consistent across your documents.

Kenya ETA Fees

All fees include the official government charge and a service fee. Choose the processing speed that fits your travel timeline.

Processing Time and Entry Rules

Most complete Kenya ETA applications are reviewed within a few days, but timing depends on document quality, travel season, public holidays, payment confirmation, and whether extra checks are required.

Approval does not replace normal border checks. On arrival, travelers may still need to show a valid passport, ETA approval, return or onward ticket, accommodation details, and funds for the stay.

Common Rejection Reasons

Blurred passport image: Upload a full, readable bio page without cut edges or glare.

Name mismatch: The ETA name should match the passport, including surname order and spelling.

Weak travel proof: Missing hotel, host, business, or itinerary details can slow review.

Late application: Applying too close to departure increases stress if extra checks are requested.

Travel Tips

Save your ETA approval offline and print a backup copy. Keep passport, return ticket, accommodation, travel insurance, and local contact details together in your hand luggage.

For first-time visitors, the best time depends on your route. Wildlife viewing is popular from July to October, beach holidays are strong around Diani and Mombasa for much of the year, and Nairobi works well for business travel year-round.

Detailed Application Guidance for United States Citizens

Decide between the standard and five-year eTA before you start, since the choice affects the form you complete. Count passport validity from your arrival date rather than your application date. Enter your name exactly as it appears in your passport's machine-readable zone, middle names included or omitted to match. Check yellow fever requirements against your transit route, not just your departure city.

After submission, monitor your email for status updates and requests for corrections. If a correction is requested, respond with the exact document requested rather than resubmitting unrelated files. Keep your payment receipt, application reference, and travel documents together until you have entered Kenya.

Before applying

Confirm passport validity, photo quality, travel dates, accommodation details, email address, and payment method.

After applying

Track the application, check email regularly, and save the approval as both a digital and printed copy.

At arrival

Carry your United States passport, ETA approval, return ticket, accommodation proof, and local contact details.

Customer Review

Went with the five-year option on their advice since we're back in Nairobi twice a year. The review caught a passport validity issue I'd miscounted.

Full Guide for United States Citizens

US citizens must obtain a Kenya eTA before travel — the United States is not on Kenya's exemption list, and there is no visa on arrival. American passport holders are uniquely eligible for a 5-year multiple-entry eTA alongside the standard single-entry option. Government processing typically takes three working days.

Data sourced from the Kenya Directorate of Immigration Services — Amendment Rules, 2025.

The 5-year eTA: a US-only option

Kenya offers US passport holders a multiple-entry eTA valid for five years. No other nationality has access to it. It is widely reported at USD 185 ⚠️VERIFY, permits unlimited entries across the five-year period, and allows stays of up to ninety days per visit.

The economics are straightforward. The standard single-entry eTA has to be bought again for every trip. If you expect to visit Kenya more than twice in five years — for business, for family, or because one safari tends to lead to another — the five-year option is cheaper in total and removes the application step from every subsequent trip.

Two conditions matter. The authorisation is tied to your passport: if your passport expires before the five years are up, the eTA expires with it and you will need to apply again against the new passport. And the eTA is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry — immigration officers make the final decision at the border.

Do US citizens need a Kenya eTA in 2026?

Yes. The United States does not appear on any exemption list published by the Directorate of Immigration Services under the 2025 Amendment Rules. Kenya abolished traditional visas in January 2024 and replaced them with the eTA system. Visa on arrival no longer exists, and airlines deny boarding to travelers without an approved eTA.

What it costs

The standard tier is $64 total ⚠️VERIFY, covering the government charge plus our document review. Urgent ($98) and super-urgent ($149) review tiers are available ⚠️VERIFY. The 5-year multiple-entry option is reported at USD 185 ⚠️VERIFY — confirm the current price on the official portal, since multi-entry pricing has changed before.

You pay the government fee directly on etakenya.go.ke. Our fee covers reviewing your documents before you submit. We do not submit your application and we do not pay the government fee for you.

Documents US applicants need

  • A valid US passport with at least six months validity remaining and at least one blank page
  • A selfie or passport-type photograph
  • Contact details — email and phone
  • Travel itinerary showing arrival and departure
  • Accommodation booking confirmation, or your host's address in Kenya
  • A payment method

Business travelers also need a company invitation letter and a copy of the Kenyan company's registration. Conference attendees need an invitation or participation letter. Family visits require a host invitation letter plus the host's ID, passport, alien card, or entry permit.

Processing times

The official portal states processing typically takes three working days and may take longer. Apply at least a week before departure. US travelers booking during the June–October migration season or the December holidays should allow longer, since application volumes climb sharply in both windows.

Our review tiers describe how fast we check your documents and return corrections. They do not accelerate government processing.

Common rejection reasons for US applicants

Passport validity miscounted. Six months is counted from your date of entry into Kenya, not from the date you apply. A passport that clears the bar in March may not clear it for an August arrival.

Middle names. US travelers frequently omit a middle name that appears on the passport, or include one that doesn't. The application must match the passport's machine-readable zone exactly.

Photo specification failures. Glare from glasses, shadows, filters, and non-plain backgrounds are the usual culprits. Use a recent colour photo in even light against a plain background.

Unreadable scans. Automated reading of a poor scan misreads passport numbers and expiry dates, and the resulting mismatch triggers a manual review and a delay.

Itinerary inconsistencies. Arrival and departure dates must match the flight booking and the accommodation reservation. Multi-country East Africa itineraries are especially prone to this.

Choosing the wrong eTA type. Applying for a single-entry eTA when your trip involves leaving and re-entering Kenya, or paying for the 5-year option when you'll only travel once, are both avoidable before submission.

Yellow fever documentation. Required when arriving from or transiting through an endemic country. A direct flight from the US doesn't trigger it; a connection through certain African or South American airports can.

What our review covers

We check your documents against the requirements before submission: passport validity against your actual entry date, exact name matching against the machine-readable zone, photo specification, scan legibility, internal consistency of travel dates and accommodation, and whether the eTA type you've selected fits your itinerary.

You submit and pay on the official government portal yourself. We are a private document review service and are not affiliated with the Government of Kenya.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The United States is not on Kenya's exemption list. All US passport holders need an approved eTA before boarding, and Kenya does not issue the eTA on arrival.

A multiple-entry authorisation available only to US passport holders, valid five years with stays up to ninety days per visit, reported at USD 185 ⚠️VERIFY. It is tied to your passport — if the passport expires first, the eTA expires with it.

It depends on frequency. The standard eTA must be purchased for every trip, so travelers expecting more than two visits in five years generally pay less overall with the multiple-entry option and skip the application step on later trips.

The official portal states processing typically takes three working days and may take longer. Apply at least a week ahead, and earlier during the June–October migration season and December holidays.

Most often: passport validity counted from the wrong date, middle names not matching the passport, photo specification failures, unreadable passport scans, and travel dates that don't line up with flight and hotel bookings. All are catchable before you submit.
