Best Time to Visit Kenya
A month-by-month look at rainfall, temperatures, migration timing, and how busy each season actually gets.
Kenya is a year-round destination, but four distinct seasons shape what your trip will actually look like — not just the weather, but the wildlife, the crowds, and the price. Here's how each one breaks down.
July – October
Dry season, and the window most associated with the Great Migration's river crossings in the Mara. Skies are clear, grass is shorter (easier wildlife spotting), and this is when demand and prices both peak. Top camps in the Mara conservancies book out 6–12 months ahead for these months. Expect daytime temperatures of roughly 25–28°C and cold mornings around 10–13°C.
January – February
A short dry spell between the two rainy seasons. The migration herds have moved back into the Serengeti by this point, but resident wildlife viewing remains excellent, predator sightings are strong (this is calving season for many plains species, which draws in big cats), and rates sit noticeably below July–October peak pricing.
March – May
Kenya's main rainy season. Afternoon downpours are common, vegetation is lush and green, and some camps close for maintenance during this window — check availability carefully. The upside: lowest rates of the year, minimal crowds, and dramatic skies for photography. Roads can be muddy, and some remote conservancies become harder to access.
November
A brief, lighter rainy period — usually short afternoon showers rather than all-day rain. Many travelers find November a reasonable compromise: lower prices than peak season, the landscape greening up, and generally manageable conditions for game drives.
If your priority is the river crossings
Aim for August or September, and book a camp with multi-night flexibility near the Mara River rather than a single overnight stop — crossing timing varies year to year with rainfall and herd movement, and no operator can promise a specific date.
If your priority is value and fewer vehicles at sightings
March through May offers the steepest discounts and the quietest camps, with the tradeoff being rain and some closures. Late November is a good middle ground if you want lower rates without committing to the heaviest rains.
If you're combining safari with the coast
Kenya's coast at Diani and Watamu has a different rhythm — it's driest and sunniest from January to March and again from July to October, broadly overlapping with the inland dry seasons. This makes those windows efficient for a combined safari-and-beach itinerary.
Plan around your Kenya ETA timing too
Whichever season you choose, factor in time for your Kenya ETA to be processed before departure. Demand for fast turnarounds tends to rise alongside peak booking season, so applying with a comfortable buffer — rather than the week before you fly — keeps your travel plans on schedule. See our trip planning guide for the full booking order.
